Black Saturday

Work started on Wednesday beginning hours of sorting and pricing all kinds of stuff for the church bazaar to be held on "Black Saturday" as we called it.
Thanksgiving for us was celebrated with a late lunch at Burger King, after sorting and pricing all day in 90 degree heat, before going to the final evening of the Parenting seminar at church. I had been invited to be the main speaker for their graduation ceremony.
A lot of work went into the seminar, and we are thankful for our friends Beto and Carla who organized and led the twelve week course held on Thursday nights. This evening each of the parents who participated received a certificate for completing the seminar, and gave a brief testimony of scriptural principles they had learned and were using with their children. Hearing some of the stories they told showed that all the time invested was worth it.
When we arrived at church on "Black Saturday" morning at quarter to eight, temperatures were already in the nineties, and there were people already waiting to get in. The doors didn't open until nine. And once again we found that one person's trash can become another person's treasure. People were leaving with big garbage bags full of clothes and household items. At one point there were over sixty people shopping in the fellowship room at the front of the church.
We took advantage of this sale, personally, to sell all of our Christmas decorations - accumulated over thirty years -and most of my cd's. We came with four 30 gallon boxes filled with decorations as well as two Christmas trees, and returned home with just a shoebox of ornaments that didn't sell.
Along with the rummage sale, pastels (deep-fried pastries filled with hamburger or cheese), pop and chips were sold in the parking area in front of the building. One of the church families has this as a profession, selling at sporting events and shows around town. (Speaking of shows, an interesting sidenote, the actor Kevin Costner and his band were in town last week as part of a São Paulo Live concert tour going on. I didn't even know that Kevin Costner played or sang!)
Anyway, the couple who runs the stand donated all the proceeds they made on Saturday to the church. Between the bazaar and the food over a thousand dollars was made on "Black Saturday" for church construction.
We were thankful for the cooperation and help of so many folks in our church family in getting ready for and doing this event.
