Restoration

The warm days of "almost summer" are here again. A good time to stop at TCBY for a tasty frozen yogurt.
And time in the pool with Jordan! Even though we've been swimming in the indoor pool all winter long.
In the end May, the weather was beautiful for the weekend of the Heritage Hill tour. Natali went along with us to take a look at some of the restored homes. We drove around that area of town looking at some of the grand old homes of Grand Rapids.

In the 1960's I used to walk by many of these places on my way to school.
By the mid-1970's, returning from Pennsylvania to Grand Rapids to study in seminary, the neighborhood had gone so downhill that the city was selling many of the houses for $1, and then you would pay whatever the restoration costs may be.
There are even a couple Frank Lloyd Wright prairie style houses.
On Memorial day we went over to Jamestown for the parade. There were some great restored classic cars around, like a '56 Ford Fairlane that parked next to us.
We enjoyed the parade with Sue's sister Karen and her husband Ron (and niece Faye and her daughter Amelia). This one was longer than the ten minute one we saw in Caledonia last year. Afterward, we had a picnic together.
More fancy cars drove along the parade route.
And of course plenty of tractors and horses. In the shot below - way in the background, behind the tractors (click on the picture to make it bigger) - is the old brick bank that my grandpa DeJongh used to go to for depositing money from the general store in Burnips where he lived a hundred years ago. The bank has a new name, but it is still operating.
Since we were so close to Burnips, we drove down there later in the day and looked around. My great-uncle Fred's (my grandpa's brother) house still has the big hill we used to slide down in the winter. And the Methodist church there has a memorial to my great-aunt Grace Fleser (my grandma's sister) who would go to open up the church building and ring the bell every Sunday morning. When the old building was torn down, the bell was put up as part of a memorial to her in front of the new church.
June rolled around, and we went to a get together with our old Sunday school class from Wealthy Street Baptist Church from the days I was in seminary. This class was from back in the days when we were all new parents. Although, six of us were even in the young people's group together. Back when it was called BYPU - Baptist Young People's Union. We had a good time, but just listening to the conversation made me start to feel old! I think that some of us could use some restoration!!
Sue is taking some time these days to restore some of the pieces of furniture that we inherited from our parents. They are beautiful and old, but just in need of some TLC.
We are looking forward to spending some time with Aaron and Rachel in California. We'll head out there later in June and stay over for 4th of July.
