California Dreamin'

To begin the month of July, we headed out west to California to visit Aaron and Rachel. We hadn't seen them since they visited us in Brazil. It was a great relaxing time together.
First stop was the beautiful beach and town of La Jolla.
Weather was fine each day, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch almost every day as we traveled around.

Since I took pictures, Sue had to carry all the sandles on the beach.

We traveled out of town to the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park for a day.

One of the best ways to see the animals was on a trainride around the park.

There were plenty of giraffes and gazelles and gorillas as well as rhinos and hippos.

It was cool to get close to the cheetah at one exhibit - she was beautiful!

Before leaving, we headed to the top of a lookout tower restaurant for something cold to drink.

Also, a great place for pictures.

Next, we took an afternoon to visit the aircraft carrier Midway and Seaport Village.

A couple hours was just too short a time to see most of the ship. Rachel's mom Kerry had arrived in town for the adventure.

The place was huge - like a small city.

Hangers were below deck, but the flight deck was amazing!

Fourth of July was coming soon!

On Sunday we went to Aaron and Rachel's church, The Rock. On the way we picked up Brazilian friends Beto and Carla from our church in Bauru. She is a college English professor in Brazil, and studying at Unversity of California this summer. Beto is a CSI and a deacon in our church (among other things), and he accompanied her on this trip. Being with them for a while helped "matar saudades" for Brazil and all of our friends there.

Sunday evening, we met up with Rachel's folks and sisters, and headed to the Point Loma Naval Base. Crossing the street, we saw the Ghostbusters car!

Because Rachel's dad Rick is a navy captain, we were able to stay at the hotel on base to celebrate Independence Day.

It was a fun time walking around, seeing the sights and getting to know the base, and of course there was lots of laughs and games - night and day.

Aaron took time to teach Beto how to hold and throw an American football. He learned quickly and threw well!

Plenty of good old American picnic food - hamburgers and potato salad.

There were all kinds of booths with services and gifts for the military, a classic car show, and lots of American flags. Carla commented on how amazing it was to celebrate an American holiday with Americans - almost like being in an American movie.

That evening we settled in by the bay, with another five thousand people, chatting and playing more games -which I lost!- while we waited for the fireworks shows (that's plural because there were seven of them during the night lasting over thirty minutes, with three coordinated at different points).

All to soon - at least for us - California time came to an end.

We went out the last night with Aaron and Rachel to San Diego Old Town, wandering the streets and shops,

and finishing off with dinner and a mariachi dance show.

It was great fun with fabulous fireworks!
